In the creation myth of the Heliopolitan, a form of ancient Egyptian religion, the 'Benben' was the mound that arose from the primordial waters of Nu, upon which the creator deity 'Atum' would arise. The Benben stone is associated with the tallest stone of a pyramid, which is also known as a pyramid's 'pyramidion' or 'benbenet.'

In the Pyramid Texts, Utterances 587 and 600, Atum himself is, at times, referred to as "mound." This 'mound of Atum' was said to have transformed into a small pyramid, located in Heliopolis, Egyptian 'Annu' or 'Iunu,' within Atum was said to dwell. Other cities shared their own unique myths of the 'Primeval Mound.' At Memphis, the god 'Tatenen,' an Earth god and the origin of "all things in the shape of food and viands, Divine offers, and all good things", became one such personification of the 'Primeval Mound.'[1]

The Benben stone, named after this Sacred mound, was a revered stone in the temple of Ra at Heliopolis, known in Egyptian as 'Annu' or 'Iunu.' It was the Sacred place where the Sun's first rays of Light would grace. This stone is believed to have served as the model for subsequent obelisks, and the capstones of the great pyramids were inspired by its design. The capstone, or the tip of the pyramid, is also referred to as a pyramidion. In ancient Egypt, these pyramidions were likely polished or covered to glisten in sunlight.[1]

 This obelisk originally erected at Luxor Temple, features a sparkling pyramidion covered in bronze and gold leaf. The Luxor Obelisk is said to have been originally erected during the Rameses II dynasty in the 13th century, however, supposedly, the current gold and bronze covered pyramidion at its peak, is a replacement for an artifact lost during invasions in Egypt in the 6th century BC... Could this artifact, like the Great Pyramids themselves, actually be much older than the commonly accepted timeline? The bird deity 'Bennu,' which may have inspired significance of the Phoenix, was venerated at Heliopolis, where it was said to be living on the Benben stone or on the 'holy willow tree'.

The Bennu is a fascinating figure in ancient Egyptian mythology, often associated with themes of rebirth and renewal, which may have inspired the later significance of the Phoenix in various cultures. This deity was venerated primarily at Heliopolis, an important religious center in ancient Egypt known for its reverence for the Sun.

"The Bennu Bird is an ancient Egyptian deity linked with the sun, creation, and rebirth. According to Egyptian mythology, the Bennu Bird was a self-created deity which played a role in the creation of the world. It was said to be the Ba (soul) of the sun god Ra and facilitated the actions of Atum, the creator god. One of the creation myths of Heliopolis tells of the first dawn and a heron, the Bennu, flying over the primeval waters of chaos (Nun) until it landed on a rock, the Ben-Ben Stone. As it did, it opened its beak and its cry echoed over the water of the Nun; this was the call that determined the nature of creation. The cry of the Bennu Bird ‘determined what is and is not to be.’ The Bennu Bird, as an aspect of Atum, brought life and light to the world."[4]

The Bennu Bird was similar in appearance to two prevalent heron species in ancient Egypt: the gray heron and the goliath heron. It is frequently depicted adorned with the Atef crown of Osiris, characterized by a white crown with two ostrich feather plumes on either side, or with a sun disk resting on his crest. In ancient Egyptian belief, the cycle of time was divinely initiated by the call of the Bennu. The Temple of the Bennu Bird in Heliopolis played a key role in managing the calendar and organizing time. The Egyptians developed a civil calendar that divided time into a 24-hour day, with twelve hours each for day and night, a ten-day week, thirty-day months, and a twelve-month year. [4]

In Papyrus Ani, also known as "Egyptian Book of The Dead" or "Book of Eternal Life," as we intuitively choose to refer, the heart-amulet and scarab beetle near to which stand the Bennu, is described as "the one who came into being by himself."

According to Barry Kemp, the connection between the Benben, the Phoenix, and the Sun may well have been based on alliteration: the rising, 'weben,' of the Sun sending its rays towards the Benben, on which the Bennu bird lives. Utterance 600 and 1652 of the Pyramid Texts speaks of Atum, "...as you rose up, as the Benben, in the Mansion of the Bennu in Heliopolis." [1]

  Orgone DIY Technique Tips

  
  

  1) Proper ventilation is important to ensure you do not inhale fumes while working with resin. Even "Non- Toxic" resins have compounds which may irritate your eyes and lungs if over-exposed.

  
  

  2) Resin formulas (usually a two-part mixture) should be mixed equally at room temperature or slightly warmer, stirring well in either disposable cup or reusable cup (we highly recommend using all silicone tools such as mold, measuring cup, spoon, baking sheet to protect work surface and for easy clean up)

  
  

  3) We recommend making the pyramid on a level surface and in multiple layers, allowing each layer to cure before the next. As long as you pour in 1/8" layers, you can make the pyramid/Orgone piece as tall as you like.

  
  

  4) Be aware of your curing time with the resin, most resins begin the drying process at around 30-45 minutes, some as early as 15 minutes, meaning you generally have anywhere from 10 to 25 minutes to work with resin, depending on which one you are using. It helps to wait around 4-6 hours before applying the next layer. The Resin we work with, Art N Glow, says we should wait at least 24 hours and potentially a full 72 hours before demolding to avoid scratching your pyramid. The resin you are using should have exact curing directions located on the back of the bottle.

  
  

  5) A paper clip or short piece of wire may come in handy to gently mix/ arrange gemstones, spirals, or other additions. A toothpick also works well for this step, and may be easier if you are working with magnets or iron oxide powder.

  
  

  6) Using a lighter with a safe handle & gentle flame or standard heat gun from the art store works well to eliminate bubbles in the final step before letting each layer cure.

  
  

  7) Rubbing Alcohol is an amazing agent for cleaning silicone materials, just make sure to have a window open while you work with resin and while you clean.
