Purpose of Runes 
 
Rune stones have been used for centuries as a tool for divination to help bring forth intuitive decisions. Originally used and created by our distant ancestors, these gemstones are inscribed with special symbols to help guide us through life's issues and enlighten a possible path forward. Runes are used as a tool for Inspiration, Intuition, and Spiritual Guidance. Runes are known for hinting towards answers and direction, but leaving you the space to work out the details, very similar to Tarot Cards intentions. 
 
Origins of Runes
 
The runic alphabet was the first written language of our Germanic ancestors and used later by Norseman in our distant past. Runes served the purpose of letters and were used for writing in several Germanic languages. However, the meanings of the Elder Futhark runes were much more profound than that of the letters we know today. Each rune was known as a symbol of a cosmic force or essential element of Life. Therefore, writing a runic letter meant invoking the power that the written rune symbolized. According to ancient tradition, runes were carved on hard natural materials such as stone, gemstones, wood, or metal. When we work with the gemstone runes in this set, know that we are following in the footsteps of our beloved ancestors. 
 
The word "rune" in German means "letter" and "secret." And that is precisely why it is believed that its original meaning was - "a silent message." The earliest runic inscriptions discovered date from around 150 AD. 
 
Runic alphabets used by Norse people are also called "futharks". They got this name from the first six runes (Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kaunan).
 
According to written history throughout time, there have actually been three different types runic letters:
 
1. The Elder Futhark (consists of 24 characters and was used from 150 to 800 AD) *The Runes in this set are Elder Futhark Runes*
 
2. Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (consisting of 33 characters and was used from 400 to 1100 AD)
 
3. The Younger Futhark (consisted of 16 characters and was used from 800 to 1100 AD).
 
Runes of the Elder Futhark
 
Elder Futhark, which is the same type of runes included in this set, is the oldest runic alphabet used by the Vikings. It consists of 24 unique runic symbols, each of which has its own meaning. The runes of this letter are grouped in three rows. This means that there are eight symbols in each row. It was believed that one God and one Goddess ruled over each order (a group of runes).
